About Alternative Marketing Experts

Russ Alman, Macintosh computer consultant, with Macintosh PowerBook G4
Hi, my name is Russ Alman, and I am the owner of Alternative Marketing Experts. I have been providing Macintosh technical support services since 1990, and have been a Macintosh consultant for almost 17 years. I founded Alternative Marketing Experts in 1994 because I saw a need for on-site technical support and consulting services specializing in Macintosh-specific solutions for home computer users and small businesses. I am currently located in Olympia, Washington, and offer my services both in Pierce and Thurston counties, including the greater Tacoma and Olympia metropolitan areas, and across North American usng a combination secure, encrypted, remote screen sharing software and telephone conversation.

My wife, Karen, and I have been married 15 years, and have two wonderful children – Alexis and Aaron. Karen uses a MacBook, and my children share a souped up PowerMac G4. (I know it’s overkill, but there are more computers in my house than people!)

Personally, I use a PowerMacintosh G5 as my base computer. It acts as my Daylite Business Server, and I do much of my graphic design for my Keep$ake Cards business from there as well. I also use a MacBook Pro. This is what I take in the field with me when I work with clients, and also allows me to work anywhere in the house using my wireless network.

I have been working with computers since I was 11 years old – first on a Radio Shack Color Computer, then a TRS-80 Model III. In 1984, my father bought his first Macintosh, and from then on I have always used Macintoshes. I have always been a Macintosh proponent -- the cheap PC-Compatible hasn't been turned on in months sicne I bought my MacBook Pro, which is able to run Windows at nearly full speed using Parallels.

Although I have been working with computers for most of my professional life, my schooling was in communications and the liberal arts. I have a B.A. in Communications from Western Michigan University, and an M.A. in Telecommunications from Michigan State University. I also have a background in foreign languages, theatre and the fine arts.

My diverse background has given me a unique perspective as a computer consultant. While I am technically savvy, my focus is on making computers and technology easier for people to use. I pride myself on my ability to translate technology into terms than the average person can understand.

If you’d like to see more about my professional background, please take a look at my resume.
